A dynamic bridge chart in Power BI

A dynamic bridge (waterfall) chart in Power BI that explains the change between two periods by segment, built with DAX and no manual setup per visual.

Role
Freelance BI consultant
Sector
Beverages
Period
2026

Problem

Users needed to see at a glance which segments explain the difference between last year and the current year, and the native visual did not cover the case.

Approach

  • A dynamic calculated table with its own sort order (it updates itself when new segments appear).
  • Four measures following the waterfall pattern: invisible base, positives, negatives and endpoints.
  • Isolating the totals from cross-filtering by other visuals so they do not collapse.

Result (qualitative)

A visual reusable across several reports with the same pattern.

Skills demonstrated

Advanced DAX (CALCULATE/ALL), model design, reusable patterns, debugging filter contexts.
